Japanese Style Creamy Sesame Dressing is a popular dressing in Japan, loved for its rich, nutty flavor and smooth, creamy texture. It’s surprisingly easy to make at home, and with just a few simple ingredients, you can have it ready in under 5 minutes. If you’re tired of the same store-bought dressings, this is a great way to switch things up with something fresh, flavorful, and homemade!

Ingredients

  • Ground roasted sesame seeds: 5 Tbsp
  • Mayonnaise: 5 Tbsp
  • Sugar: 2 tsp
  • Soy sauce: 1½ Tbsp
  • Rice vinegar: 2½ Tbsp
  • Oil (avocado, olive, vegetable, etc.): 2 Tbsp
  • Dashi powder: ½ tsp (optional)

3. Add the oil
Slowly drizzle in the oil little by little while whisking continuously. Mixing gradually helps prevent the mayonnaise from separating.

4. Serve or store
Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Mix well before serving if separation occurs.

Recipe Tip

  • Use Kewpie mayo for authentic taste: For the most Japanese-style flavor, use Kewpie mayonnaise if available. It gives a richer, slightly sweeter taste compared to regular mayo. However, regular mayonnaise also works well.

FAQ

Q. Can I use regular sesame seeds instead of roasted ground sesame seeds?

Yes, you can use regular sesame seeds if that’s what you have. However, for the best flavor, use roasted ground sesame seeds. You can usually find them in Japanese or Asian grocery stores. If you can’t find ground roasted sesame seeds, you can easily make them at home using a food grinder. For reference, you can follow the method in my Sesame Spinach recipe.
